UUM FIRST ESSAY COMPETITION WINNERS
Unicaf University Malawi wishes to thank all participants in the first essay competition on the topic: “How can higher education of international quality fight youth unemployment in Malawi?”. The entries submitted prove that young Malawians acknowledge youth unemployment rates can be reduced by making higher education accessible and affordable for all, which is the actual mission of Unicaf University.
The competition awards ceremony was held on October 31st at Unicaf University’s state-of-the-art campus in Lilongwe, in the presence of representatives of the Malawi media. The Vice Chancellor of Unicaf University Malawi Professor Joseph Kuthemba Mwale congratulated the winners and handed them their scholarship certificates and free tablets. In his brief speech, Professor Kuthemba Mwale said the competition is part of the institution’s corporate social responsibility programme, aiming to assist students who cannot join a university because financial difficulties prevent them from paying the required tuition fees.
24 year old Johannes Chikufenji, a Business Administration graduate from Mchinji district, was the first winner and he received a full scholarship for a Master’s degree of his choice with Unicaf University. Ian Mchuchu, the 21 year old second winner from Dedza district has a degree in Computer Science and he received a 90% scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree with Unicaf University. James Fanuel Richards from Blantyre district, a 26 year old Computer Science graduate, was the third winner and he received an 85% scholarship towards a Master’s degree with Unicaf University. Full scholarship winner Johannes Chikufenji thanked Unicaf University on behalf of all the winners for the generous prizes they received, which, he said, will assist them to realise their dreams.
The University will continue to provide similar opportunities to the youth of Malawi through new competitions, which will be announced soon in the press and in Unicaf University’s website and social media.
